Late goal breaks Wadadah’s heart
published: Monday | March 19, 2007

Adrian Frater, News Editor

Western Bureau:

Struggling Wadadah FC gave up a glorious chance to grab three points at the hands of Boys? Town in their 2006-07 Wray & Nephew National Premier League fixture at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay yesterday afternoon when they gave up a last second goal to convert a 2-1 lead into a 2-2 draw.

?We had victory there for the taking, we just had to hang on for a few seconds more,? said Wadadah?s coach Allan Aarons. ?I thought we showed a lot of fight today and we just have to keep plugging away in our bid to avoid relegation.?

By virtue of the one point earned from the game, the Wadadah team, which got their goals from Markino Gillings and Dameon Campbell, is still firmly rooted in the relegation zone in 11th place in the 12-team competition on 18 points.

?We played well for the first 30 minutes and then allowed Wadadah back into the game,? said Boys? Town?s coach Andrew Price, whose team scored through Denzil Watson and substitute Peter Keyes. ?A point on the road is an acceptable resul we would have been happier with all three points.?

The game started with Boys? Town enjoying the better of the early exchanges and looking more purposeful in attack. After coming close on a few occasions, they took the lead in the 32nd minute. Watson pounced on a rebound from goalkeeper Gavine Barrett and booted in, making the score 1-0.

Dreadful blunder

Wadadah drew level courtesy of a dreadful blunder by Boys? Town?s goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie, whose attempt to dribble around Gillings was thwarted by the striker, who calmly crossed to the unmarked Campbell. Campbell made no mistake, driving a left-footer into the roof of the net, making the half-time score 1-1.

Boys? Town started the second half looking to regain control of the game and got two glorious chances in the 53rd and 55th minutes to regain the lead. Firstly, Watson fired wide from close range and secondly, several shots were taken in a goalmouth melee but all the efforts were blocked.

With Wadadah gradually taking control of the game and looking ominous, they took the lead in the 73rd minute. Gilllings won possession on the edge of the penalty area, turned sweetly and cracked a fierce shot into the goal, making the score 2-1 and raising hopes of a long overdue win.

Wadadah missing a glorious chance to seal the issue in the 87th minute when Gillings broke free before the goal but was brilliantly dispossessed by goalkeeper Crumbie, who left his line smartly to win possession of the ball.

With time ticking away and a Wadadah victory looking imminent, Boys? Town drew level with the last attack of the game. George Vernal broke free on the right flank and crossed perfectly to Keyes. His header flashed past the goalkeeper, making the final score 2-2.

AT TONY SPAULDING SPORTS COMPLEX: Leon Strickland scored at the 34th minute to hand Arnett Gardens a 1-0 victory over Westmoreland?s Reno, the second end-of-round champions.

Arnett moved to 33 points, one adrift fifth-placed Tivoli Gardens, while Reno remained second on 45 points, trailing leaders Harbour View (53) by eight points.
