The Editor, Sir:In a time when we are constantly bombarded with negative stories involving the police, I would like to highlight a very positive experience that we had with them.
On Friday, March 2, our bearer was travelling along Balmoral Avenue when unbeknownst to him, money that he was transporting fell out of his bag. Passers-by proceeded to help themselves to the money until two police officers attached to Harmon Barracks, who had witnessed the event, proceeded to intervene and seize the money. Special Corporal Bendison and Special Constable Wallen, with the assistance of a Mr. Caine (a civilian bystander), collected about 85 per cent of the money and reported it to the Half-Way Tree Police Station. The report was carried on the evening newscast which is when we became aware of the recovery of the money which we assumed was long gone.
The prompt, efficient and absolute professionalism exhibited by the above individuals, as well as Superintendents George Quallo (Half-Way Tree), Newton Amos (Hunts Bay), and Deputy Superintendent Phipps (Hunts Bay) leave me with a profound sense of pride in the integrity they have shown. I believe it does the country good to know that there are some exceptional and honest people serving in the police force.
I would like to express my profound gratitude to the Jamaica Constabulary Force for their exemplary service.
