Struggling Wadadah hold Arnett
published: Friday | March 23, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

ARNETT GARDENS coach Glendon Bailey insists that he has seen a marked improvement in the team's mind-set and overall attitude to discipline since the decision taken by the club to suspend forwards Marcelino Blackburn and Kevin Wilson for the season's eight remaining games.

"Right now we have a totally different attitude in the changing room," Bailey said following his team's 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Wadadah on Wednesday evening at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

"We have more unity, more energy, and who knows, if we had started like that from scratch maybe we would have been in a better position at this point in the season," he said.

In Wednesday's game, Arnett, who are currently in sixth spot on 34 points, were unlucky to not have come away with maximum points from the fixture.

Midfielder Cornel Chin-Sue saw his 23rd-minute attempt, a dipping free kick from 20 yards out, fisted away at full stretch by Wadadah custodian Gavine Barrett.

Seventeen minutes later, Barrett would once again be called into action as a defender's error let striker Kwame Richardson lose in the area. The keeper came up big to parry away the forward's resulting fierce blast to goal and then gobbled up the follow-up effort.

Relegation zone

However, Wadadah, who are currently in relegation zone with 19 points, also had their opportunities to come away with what would have been an important win.

In fact, the lanky Rohan Reid did head the ball into the back of the net from a 48th minute corner. The play was however called back by the referee for a foul in the area. In the 58th minute, target man Markeino Gillings managed to shake off Arnett defender Marlon Benbow and deliver to Derrick Allen at the back post.

Allen's looping header went over the head of Arnett custodian Moschell Nelson, but was cleared off the line by defender Wayne Ellis. Wadadah captain Daniel Ricketts, who was substituted with an injury in the first half, was not pleased with just a draw in his team's current situation. However, he believes Wadadah might just survive the relegation drop.

"We've been putting in the work over the past three weeks and we have been encouraged by our recent results," Ricketts said.

"However, from now on we have to go for the wins and that should see us steer our way out of the relegation zone." he said.
