PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP)TRINIDAD AND Tobago are back on a soccer field after a two-week hiatus due to a lack of funding for the squad.
Sports Minister Roger Boynes has pledged TT$18 million (US$3.6 million, ?2.7 million) owed since last year to various coaches attached to the national teams. He has mandated that the national soccer federation submit bills and the coaches' contracts so payment can be made.
An injury-plagued build-up by the team for tomorrow's friendly against Guadeloupe worsened on Wednesday when captain Densill Theobald suffered a knee injury in a training match at Ato Boldon Stadium. X-rays confirmed ligament damage and he'll be sidelined for up to three weeks.
Theobald, the only World Cup player left in the squad selected by Wim Rijsbergen, was caught in a late tackle by Chevaughn Frederick.
Midfielder Andrei Pacheco withdrew on Wednesday after a call to trial for Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew. Already, St. Johnstone striker Jason Scotland was unavailable because of club commitments, and midfielder Leslie Fitzpatrick was recovering from strained ankle ligaments sustained in training following Trinidad's 2-1 loss to Panama in January.
