Politics and cricket
published: Thursday | March 29, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Cricket is in the airand the teams are showcasing their players. Any team that wants to win the coveted trophy must have the talent, but must also select the best players.

I use this opportunity to compare our two political parties in cricket terms. The PNP has a very popular captain when compared to the JLP. But the PNP has problems selecting its team for the elections. Even as I write, the PNP does not have their full team, while the JLP is busy practicing in the nets.

The selection process in the PNP has many stumbling blocks, some of which I will highlight below.

1) Some players that the JLP dropped because of non-performance are now playing for the PNP.

2) The PNP has to be calling players out of retirement, and even players who indicate a willingness to retire are asked to remain on the team.

3) Players who were in the final 60 have been dropped and replaced with other players whom they believe can make more runs.

4) Players who have been at the wicket for a very long time without scoring any runs have been retained on the team.

5) The JLP team appears more united and versatile than the PNP.

6) Audley Shaw as well as Bruce Golding can bat at finance, but it appears as if only Omar Davies is capable of playing in that position. Trevor MacMillan or Derrick Smith could bat at security but Peter seems to hold firm to that spot.

If this was a cricket match, it looks like the JLP would win, but remember that politics is a very funny game.

I am, etc.,
