Outrage against India unwarranted, says Dev
published: Thursday | March 29, 2007

Kapil Dev - File

AHMEDABAD, India (CMC):

LEGENDARY FORMER Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev said Tuesday the public outrage at the national side's Cricket World Cup exit was unwarranted. "When people are in anger they should not take any decision in haste which could create trouble in future. Whatever we say now it will be wrong," Kapil, a former captain, said.

"Yes, our team has not played well and this is the time to sit and take stock of things. We will have to find out the areas which has led to this failure."

India shockingly crashed out of the tournament in the Caribbean after losing to unfancied Bangla-desh by five wickets a fortnight ago, and then suffering a second defeat to Sri Lanka last Friday.

Really sad

It meant that Sri Lanka, who finished the group unbeaten, qualified for the Super Eight second round along with Bangladesh, who also beat Bermuda.

"It is really sad we could not play well and make it to the top eight," Kapil said, noting that both India and Pakistan had reached a new low following their performances in the World Cup.

Pakistan, like India, exited the tournament early after losing to hosts West Indies and Ireland

Kapil, who led India to their only World Cup triumph in 1983, praised surprise teams Bangladesh and Ireland.

"I am very happy to see the manner in which Ireland and Bangladesh have played this World Cup. It is very good for cricket," he said.
