Anthony Minott, Freelance WriterPORTMORE UNITED demolished Reno 4-0 at the Ferdie Neita Park yesterday in a JFF Wray and Nephew National Premier League match.
Goals by Carlington Smith, Garth Boota, Ricardo Cousins and Anthony Bennett gave the Ferdie Neita-based outfit their handsome win.
The victory pushed Portmore to 48 points and leapfrog Reno for second place in the standings behind Harbour View's 53, as Reno dropped to third on 46 points.
"Reno beat us the last time we met them and we wanted to show them that we can beat them," Lival Dixon, head coach of Portmore, told The Gleaner.
He further stated that he thought his team should have won the match from the first half but his attackers kept missing clear-cut chances.
Portmore, who dominated the game in all departments, took an early lead when Smith latched on to a rebound spilled by goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr and fired home from close range.
Nifty pass
Fourteen minutes later, Boota shot past Kerr after receiving a nifty pass from Kevin Deerr. As if to add salt to Reno's wounds, their national representative, Nicholy Findlayson, was sent off in the 24th minute for stomping on Portmore's Wolry Wolfe.
The second half saw Portmore step on the gas but were kept out by good goalkeeping by Kerr. However, Reno wilted under the constant pressure and conceded two goals in 10 minutes. First, Cousins slotted home a Steven Morrissey left-side cross in the 79th minute, then Anthony Bennett rounded off the scoring 10 minutes later by beatingKerr at his near post.
"This is the worst game we have played all season," a dejected Wendell Downswell, coach of Reno, said. He said his team had not played well since the third round began and that it was a concern to the coaching staff.
