$20m road bill for Portland, St Mary
published: Friday | March 30, 2007

A preliminary assessment of damage to road infrastructure as a result of heavy rains affecting Portland and St. Mary has been estimated at over $20 million.

However, Stephen Shaw, manager of communication and customer service at the National Works Agency said a full assessment of the damage would not be completed until about next week as heavy rains are still affecting Portland.

According to Mr. Shaw, most of the damage has been done to roads in the upper Rio Grande Valley. He said all the roads are now clear of landslides or debris.

Over the past week, heavy rains triggered by a frontal system have been dumping several inches of rain across the island, especially in the north-eastern parishes.
