Election boss warns underage cons
published: Friday | March 30, 2007

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has raised concerns about the high incidence of under age persons who are seeking to be enumerated.

In a statement yesterday, Director of Elections Danville Walker described this development as "disturbing", warning that persons under the age of 18 who were involved in this practice could be prosecuted.

"We at the EOJ are on the look-out for such persons and I can assure you that they will not go undetected," he said.

Mr. Walker said the name of the offenders would not be placed on to the voters' list and if ineligible persons registered in fictitious names they would experience difficulties if they tried to register in their correct name.

"There are reports in some constituencies of people attempting to register Haitians who claim to be married to Jamaicans and yet they can show no proof of marriage," said Mr. Walker, explaining that in such situations they would not be registered unless they met the requirements for registration.

Persons who provide false information to enumerators are in breach of the Representation of the People Act.
