Take American Don
published: Friday | March 30, 2007

Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

THE PICK-9 again proved elusive at Caymanas Park on Wednesday, and the carry-over going into tomorrow's meet stands at $3.4 million.

With heavy betting anticipated, the payout could reach $5 million, if the Pick-9 is indeed caught. It embraces races two to 10; the Super-6 races five to 10.

We look at the Super-6, which gets under way with a restricted allowance two over 1100 metres for five-year-olds and up. The eight-strong field includes the ante-post favourite AMERICAN DON, who advertised his well-being last Saturday when finishing second to SHINING SUN in the Jockeys' Guild Trophy race over 1400 metres after running very wide into the straight.

Prior to that, AMERICAN DON finished a close-up third to HIGH GOLD over the straight five course and he should be good enough to lead home SHUTTLE (speedy sort), PRINCE ORPHAN and GENUINE GOLD.

The down-in-class CHOO CHOO CHOO usually has the beating of $160,000 claimers and should not be missed in the sixth race over the straight five course. The five-year-old horse gets the nod over course specialist SOUTHERN DANCER, a winner last time out, and RING OF FIRE, who is down in class as well.

CRUISING ALTITUDE, narrowly beaten by RUCKUS over the straight recently, should gain compensation over a more suitable trip in the seventh race for the 'Morty' Heron Memorial Cup at 1820 metres, a race in which RAINBOW TRAIN, MAMBO and NIJINSKY'S WAR (regaining form) are not without chances.

Briefly, KAZ HO ME, who enjoys galloping over the straight course, should prove too strong for YYESSBABY and ANOTHER RANKING (slipped saddle last Saturday) in the eighth race for $160,000 claimers over the straight.

The vastly improved MAJOR MAYER looks hard to oppose in the ninth for open allowance horses, a race in which LA REINA (working well) looks his only danger. And close the programme with RED ROCK who returns on a convenient mark in the 1500-metre race in which ROYAL KINGDOM, BREAKING NEWS, CELEBRATION TIME and NAVAJOJOE could make it close. That's the Hi-Five.
