Vernon wraps up Trafalgar series title
published: Friday | March 30, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

FORMER NATIONAL representative Dane Vernon knocked off two-time Class One champion Dwayne Pagon to wrap up the five-tournament Trafalgar Travel Series at the Liguanea Club courts recently.

Vernon won the final tournament of the series, the Trafalgar Travel Amateur Tennis Championship, when he got by Yussuf Migoko 6-4, 6-4 in the final. Before that, Vernon had turned back the favourite, Pagon, who already had one tournament under his belt, with a hard-fought victory in the semi-finals. Vernon finished with345 points to wrap up the top spot.

In men's Class Two action, Allie McNab got by Simon Casserly 6-7, 0-6, 6-2 in the Class Two final but, with 240 points, had to settle for the second overall behind Howard Powell, who finished with 275 points. Powell made it to three of the finals and won two.

In Class Three, Richard Harris successfully defended his title without even stepping on to the court as he was given a walkover over Leopold Fungsang who was not fit to play. Fungsang finished in second place with 235 points, but the category belonged to Harris who amassed 290 points by winning three tournaments. In Class Four, Andrez Coy did not make the final of the Traflagar Travel tournament but that did not matter as, having won two previous tournaments, he was home and dry on 260 points.

In the Class Four final, Warrenton Dixon defeated Nigel Taylor 6-2, 0-6, 7-6. Taylor finished the series in second place with 240 points.

Sasha Hanna dominated the Women's B category as she finished with 195 points, 75 ahead of nearest contender Shaneka Knight. Hanna defeated Knight 6-1, 7-5 in the Women's B final.

The overall winners in each category were given airline tickets courtesy of American Airlines and match tickets to this year's Sony Ericsson Open.

Other tournaments in the series were the Llockett McGregor Amateur Tennis Classics, the Wata Amateur Tennis Classic (Wisynco), the Wigton Windfarm Amateur Tennis Classic and the Jamaica National Amateur Tennis Championship.
