'Cop killer slain' - Denham Town Station shot up in revenge attack
published: Monday | April 2, 2007

Petrina Francis, Staff Reporter

Christopher 'Cheese Trix' Williams, who allegedly killed Special Corporal Charles Gordon as he conducted a traffic check downtown Kingston in January, was shot dead by the police early yesterday morning.

Two hours later, gunmen opened fire at the Denham Town Police Station in western Kingston, resulting in a police constable being shot and injured and one of the attackers being killed. Police labelled the attack as a retaliation to Williams' death.

Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, head of the Kingston Western Police Division, told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre that cops from the Flying Squad, Organised Crime and Area Four divisions were on Spanish Town Road, in the vicinity of Weymouth Drive about 4:30 a.m. yesterday, when they signalled a Toyota Corolla motor car to stop.

He said the driver disobeyed and sped towards Six Miles. The police gave chase and the car was intercepted along Mandela Highway.

Two men reportedly alighted from the vehicle and opened fire at the police. The police returned fire and Williams was fatally shot, Supt. Hewitt said.

The police division chief said the other man, whom they believed was also shot, escaped.

A Desert Eagle pistol with two rounds of ammunition was taken from the dead man, who was on the Western Kingston police's most wanted list, but managed to evade the lawmen for over a year. The 23-year-old was wanted in connection with several murders and shootings.

Among the crimes are the killing of four persons in Jones Town last week and the murder of a pregnant woman in December.

Denham town firefight

Supt. Hewitt said about 6:30 a.m., men from Albert and Nuttall streets in Kingston opened fire at the Denham Town Police Station. A joint police/military detachment on patrol responded, and during an exchange of gunfire an uniden-tified man was shot and later pronounced dead at hospital. A Smith and Wesson 9mm gun was reportedly taken from him.

The police constable who was shot and injured during the attack on the station was treated and released from hospital. The shooting was the second attack on lawmen in the last two days.
