HIV virus discoverer to speak at the Hilton
published: Monday | April 2, 2007

Internationally acclaimed scientist, Dr. Robert Gallo, who discovered the HIV/AIDS virus in 1980, is to deliver a special public lecture on HIV/AIDS at the Hilton Kingston hotel this evening.

The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Gallo is one of the most distinguished and sought-after medical scientists in the world, particularly because he discovered the HIV/AIDS virus and has been a nominee for the Nobel Prize for Medicine. For the last 11 years, he has been director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Chairman of the Environmental Health Foundation, Dr. Henry Lowe, who invited Dr. Gallo to Jamaica, said the visit will be significant because it provides a boost for plans to establish a state-of-the-art Institute of Virology at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies.
