George Phillip dies
published: Monday | April 2, 2007

Phillip

Distinguished businessman Dr. George Phillip is dead.

He died at home in St. Andrew on Saturday night following an eight-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 69.

Dr. Phillip served as director on a number of government and private sector boards, including the Jamaica Observer of which he was a founding member, Guardian Holdings and the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (RBTT). He also served as executive director of Appliance Traders Limited and as a director of the board of the Sandals holding company, Gorstew.

In 2005 he was conferred with the Order of Distinction by former Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke, for his years of service to the industrial relations front.

Dr. Phillip is survived by widow Janet and two daughters, Alicia and Ky-Ann. He is remembered by his wife as a gracious but humble family man.

"He was a tremendous family man. He was at his best point when he met with people at their level. He was strong," she recalled yesterday.
