Last-minute goal lifts Reno
published: Monday | April 2, 2007

Richard Bryan, Freelance Writer

Manchester:

Substitute Ricardo Scott grabbed a last-minute goal for Reno to defeat defending champions Waterhouse 2-1 in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League match at St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) yesterday and finally to earn their first win in the third round after four matches.

Scott, who is Reno's leading scorer for the season with 11 goals, had not scored since his two strikes against August Town in the second round. However, he had the presence of mind to sneak in at the far end and score from a partial save effected by goalkeeper Richard Malcolm off a shot by dangerman Kirk Wright.

The game was, however, largely influenced by Kendrie Quarrie, Renos' most consistent player all season.

First, he got the opening goal of the game when he curled one past Malcolm directly from the corner kick in the 48th minute.

He also produced the tackle on Weston Forrest which provided the penalty from which Irvino English equalised in the 71st minute.

Renos' win pushes them to 49 points, while defending champions Waterhouse remain on 44.

Coach Wendell Downswell, who was missing from the Renos' bench due to national duties over the last month, said the win would help to put back some focus in their campaign for the top spot.

"What this does now is to give us some hope. As long as the others falter, we are confident we will do the necessary work to catch up. I would be happy with even a second -place finish."
