Clash of the heavyweights
published: Wednesday | April 4, 2007

WITH SIX points between them, leaders Harbour View and Portmore United will meet in rescheduled Wray and Nephew National Premier League game that could decide the title. Tonight's game starts at 7:00 at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium.

Harbour View have shown the greatest consistency since the second round of the competition while Portmore United have had the best results for the third round so far - having won all their games in the NPL under the guidance of new coach Linval Dixon. On the other hand, Harbour View have shown more staying power than they did last year when they fell away after enjoying a lead as big a 15 points. Defending champions and former leaders Waterhouse have fallen off the pace while Renos second-round run appears to be just that.

The result is very important to us. If it goes their way we will consider them champions as it would be very difficult to peg them back after that based on the way they are playing and the fact that they would be nine points ahead of us, said Dixon about todays game.

Dixon said the game would be treating the game as seriously as a final and said his team would be looking at only one possible result.

We will be going there for just one result - a win, the calmly confident Dixon said.

Harbour Views Lenworth Hyde, a former coach of Portmore United, sees a victory over Portmore as a route to the title but not the end of it.

This game means a great, great, great deal to us," Hyde said. It is our aim to win the title and Portmore United are one of the teams in our way so we will have to get by them and that is how we see it, said the former national midfielder.

Being the leaders in the competition, Hyde said a bulls-eye was on their backs.

We have to improve for every game we play as each team we play will be coming to beat us. Even if we beat Portmore we will not take anything for granted as there will still be other matches to play and these teams could upset us, he said.

On paper, the matchup will be between two of the deepest teams in the country. Both are populated with current and former national players with the ability to turn the match at any moment. For Harbour View, the likes strike duo Fabian Taylor and Kavin Bryan will be hard to contain while Lovel Palmer, Donald Stewart, Christopher Harvey, Jermaine Hue, Jermaine Taylor and Robert Scarlett should provide good support.

Portmore United will have former national striker Onandi Lowe, Kevin Deerr, Mario Swaby, Oneil McDonald, Anthony Modeste, Chris Dawes, Wolry Wolfe and Tyrone Sawyers to lead them into battle.
