WESTERN BUREAU:
Attorney-at-law and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for Eastern Westmoreland, Don Foote, has rebuffed claims that he is being replaced by the leadership of the party, and is instead expressing confidence in his position in the party.
"As far as I know I am the choice candidate to represent the party in the upcoming elections," he said. "There is no indication from the delegates that they don't want me to represent the party in the next election."
Not satisfied
Dennis Meadows, JLP deputy general secretary, told The Gleaner last week that the party's hierarchy was not satisfied with the work being done in the constituency and indicated there was a possibility that Foote would be replaced.
The comments did not go down well with the caretaker, who described Meadows as an "old NDM derelict", and stated that his comments were irresponsible and unauthorised.
Foote opposed and lost to then Prime Minister P.J. Patterson in the 2002 general elections, and suffered a similar fate against Luther Buchanan in the June 7, 2006 by-election, following Patterson's retirement.
Dr. Horace Chang, deputy leader in charge of JLP's Area Four Council, described the Eastern Westmoreland constituency as a challenging seat.
"Unless something dramatic happens, Don Foote will be our candidate. He is entitled to a chance as he has done a great deal of work in the constituency and we have seen results," Dr. Chang said.
"A number of things are not quite ready, but I am sure we'll get there. Dennis was only stating the policy of the party, I am certain he meant no harm."
