The driver of a Leyland truck, who escaped with minor injuries after it overturned in St. Catherine, watched helplessly as persons took just minutes to loot more than 16 tonnes of feed, valued at $400,000, from the vehicle.
"I never see people remove bag feeding so fast, as in less than 10 minutes, the more than 600 bags of feed tek weh and nobody no try get me out a the truck," Delroy Daley, the visibly shaken truck driver, told The Gleaner on the scene.
He said that at about 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday he was travelling from Old Harbour to Linstead with the feed when, on reaching a section of the McCooks Pen main road, logs being carried on the truck became loose, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
Sad incident
Several persons on the scene said that though it was a sad incident they were thankful.
"Lord Jesus, a early Christmas. Last week a juice truck an dis week a feeding (truck). Thank you puppa Jesus fi the road," one person said.
Others claimed the area was a farming community where chicken rearing was the livelihood of many residents and it was good that the accident happened.
Many told the driver that he was lucky that it never occurred further down the road, where the entire truck would have been stolen.
The St. Catherine North police have taken charge of the investigation.
The accident caused a massive traffic pile-up which returned to normal after the police arrived on the scene.
