AFTER A nine-year break, the regional motor racing championship returns to Jamaica's premier circuit racing track - the Dover Raceway in St. Ann on Easter Monday.

The six-member Guyanese team, headed by the Caribbean's champion driver, Mark Vieira, is scheduled to have several practice sessions at the track before the qualifying which begins on Sunday. "The cars are still on the wharf but they will be sent to Dover as soon as we are off," said Hilary Jardine, president of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC).

The last Caribbean Championship was held on May 25, 1998, the year Jamaica's David Summerbell won the title.

Motor Sales-sponsored cars ready

Although his Motor Sales-sponsored cars are ready, Summerbell has spent the majority of his time training with the national bobsleigh team.

Peter Rae's New York Break Company/Auto Don RX7 Mazda has been extensively prepared and should give the foreigners a good challenge.

"I am ready and the car is well prepared," said Rae. However, the man all eyes will be focusing on is Peter 'Bull' Thompson with his blue and white RX7, which he has been using to dominate the GTS events.

"I am going out there to do my best as usual and just have a good time," said the 55-year-old Thompson. "Gerald Rhoden is here and the foreigners are coming, right now I am feeling very happy," he said. The 10-race card will get under way at 10:00 a.m.
