THE EDITOR, Sir:

The sponsoring of portions of the Cricket World Cup event, especially the opening ceremony in Jamaica, was a most remarkable occasion for the country in terms of enhancing and promoting the country on the global perspective, thereby exposing us to possible future economic and other diplomatic prospects. The event can be regarded as one of our best opportunities to enhance the welfare of the country.

The opening ceremony was spectacular but, as with other preparations, it appears that there were some shortcomings in the overall planning.

Having reviewed the planning arrangements for accommodation for patrons, especially as it relates to motor vehicle parking for the Sabina Park venue in particular, there appears to be a weakness. Also for residents, schools, businesses etc. in the immediate vicinity of the complex, there were great inconveniences in terms of restrictive movements for these entities.

Take parking, for example, there were several designated parking locations to facilitate the cricket matches all detached from the park at distant locations - as far as downtown, Kingston.

Transfers

Although the reports indicate that the transfers from these locations have been satisfactory, these separate and distant locations are inconvenient, inappropriate, costly and could have resulted in lower turnout.

It would, therefore, appear that some long-term forward planning regarding the future and practicality of Sabina Park's location should have been contemplated. The present location of this important sports complex, being in the midst of residential/commercial community with minimal parking accommodation, requires deep contemplation.

Rather than spending the substantial amount of money to renovate and expand the complex, it would appear more feasible and more appropriate to have relocated the complex to the Caymanas area or somewhere between Kingston and Old Harbour. This would provide adequate space to facilitate the convenience of patrons, not only for this event, but for future activities. It would be a greater attraction to sporting enthusiasts.
