Removing GCT from legal fees
published: Sunday | April 8, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Having read on the front page of The Gleaner of March 28, "Remove GCT on legal fees for criminal cases, "K.D. Knight," I find it very strange that Mr. Knight, an attorney-at-law, is now calling on the Government to remove the General Consumption Tax on legal fees for criminal cases, describing it as oppressive.

He may or may not be right that many of those that are charged for criminal offences cannot afford to pay the fees, inclusive of the General Consumption Tax.

Mr. Knight, who has been a member of the Government for many years, holding high-profile Cabinet posts, has just seen the General Consumption Tax on legal fees for criminal cases as oppressive. Maybe his vision has just cleared in that he now plans to resume his career in the law.

I would like to mention to the good parliamentarian that it is not only the legal fees in criminial cases that the G.C.T. is oppressive on, but also on motor vehicle insurance policies, to name another. Remove G.C.T. and maybe reduce the number of people driving around uninsured on our roads.

I am, etc.
