The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has announced a schedule of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the passing of the nation's second Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Sir Donald Sangster on Wednesday, April 11.

The main event, a symposium in the Clarendon College auditorium, Chapelton at 4:30 p.m., will be addressed by the Leader of the Opposition, Bruce Golding. Mr. Sangster was the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Central Clarendon at the time of his passing.

At 8:00 a.m., the leaders of the party and BITU will lay wreaths at the Sangster monument in National Heroes Park. It was the first monument erected for a prime minister in the park. At 3:00 p.m., a pictorial exhibition will be opened in the Sir Donald Sangster Library, Chapelton, by Mrs. Gloria Charles, wife of Mr. Pearnel Charles, the current MP for North Central Clarendon. .

Sir Donald Sangster led the JLP to victory in the first general election held in independent Jamaica in 1967. He had been acting Prime Minister since 1964 when the first Prime Minister, Sir Alexander Bustamante fell ill and withdrew from public life.

After being sworn in as Prime Minister, Mr. Sangster was preparing his Budget speech when he suffered from a sub-arachnid haemorrhage and was flown to the Montreal Neuro-Psychological Institute for treatment. He succumbed on April 11 and his body was flown home to a nation enveloped in grieving.

After an official funeral with full national honours he was laid to rest in National Heroes Park, where all persons who have held the office of prime minister are to be buried. He was the first.
