LOC says no security lapse in Woolmer case
published: Wednesday | April 11, 2007

Petrina Francis, Staff Reporter

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Owen Ellington, chairman of the Local Security Committee for ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC), has dismissed claims made by Former Pakistan cricket team captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq that a lapse in security resulted in the murder of the team's coach Bob Woolmer.

On Monday, a Reuters report quoted Inzamam as saying that if a security lapse had occurred in any other country, they would have stopped the World Cup.

"He (Inzamam) is not a security specialist. ICC has endorsed our security arrangements before and after (the murder of Mr. Woolmer)," ACP Ellington told The Gleaner yesterday.

Found unconscious in his room

Mr. Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his room at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, last month, less than 24 hours after his team lost all hope of advancing in the Cricket World Cup after a shock defeat to Ireland at Sabina Park. He died at 12:14 p.m. at the nearby University Hospital of the West Indies.

ACP Ellington noted that the security arrangements which were in place at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, which accommodated members of the cricket teams which were in Jamaica for the first round of CWC, will be a part of the murder investigation.

"I think it is out of order for anybody to be making any remarks as it relates to the procedure," he said.
