Robert Bailey, Freelance WriterJAMAICA SWIMMING sensation Brad Hamilton powered his way into the national record books on the third day of the four-day 35th CARIFTA Swimming Championships at the National Stadium pool on Monday evening.
Hamilton captured the boys' 15-17 50m breaststroke in new national mark of 29.91, ahead of Rodion Davelaar of the Netherland Antilles (30.89) and Michael McIntosh of the Bahamas (32.03). Jamaica have now won 33 medals in the championships, which includes six gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze.
The Bahamas top the medal standings with 59, including 32 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze. The French Antilles are in second place with 21 gold, 19 silver and 17 bronze. Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) have 16 gold, 19 silver and 23 bronze.
Brent Thompson of The Bahamas won the boys' 13-15 50m breaststroke in 32.92 ahead of Ryan Rigues (T&T) 32.99 and Jourdy Matis (Netherland Antilles) 33.67.
Valy Pelagie (French Antilles) won the boys' 11-12 100m freestyle in 58.74 in front of Evante Gibson of The Bahamas (1:02.30) and French Antilles' Medhy Jolo 1:02.53.
Branden Whitehurst of the U.S. Virgin Islands won the boys' 15-17 100m freestyle in 53.14 ahead of Nosy Pelagie (French Antilles - 53.21) and Micky Van Der Vaart of Aruba (53.98).
Bahamian Alicia Lightbourne captured girls' 15-17 50m breaststroke in 34.19 ahead of Jamaica's Natasha Moodie (34.26) and Kimba Collymore of T&T (34.33).
Ashley Butler of The Bahamas won the girls' 13-14 100m freestyle in 1:01.11 ahead of the French Antilles' Camille Eginer (1:01.44) and Maria Elena Letang (1:01.71.
Vince Regent (French Antilles) won the boys' 13-14 100m freestyle (55.51) ahead of teammate Lorys Bourelly (55.62) and Gregory Marchena of the Netherland Antilles (55.96).
