The Editor, Sir:I am in my mid-forties and have never voted. My reluctance to take the initiative to do so was due in part to the dismal performance of the elected political party over the years, and their failure to really make a substantial effort to address some of the serious social and economic concerns which have had a crippling effect on our country.
I realise, however, that this was not the characteristic of a responsible citizen, and that this approach would never solve the problems that this country was experiencing, and also that my act of omission could contribute to the perpetuation of inept governance.
It was with this concern in mind why I visited the Electoral Office after much deliberation and had myself registered. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that there are persons who are still standing on the sidelines not wanting to commit themselves to the process, but I want to take this opportunity to urge them to get involved, be proactive and demonstrate an interest in the development of this lovely country of ours, by getting themselves registered, exercising their franchise and voting in the next general election.
I am, etc.,
