Illegal taxi operator fined
published: Thursday | April 12, 2007

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner correspondent

Spanish Town, St Catherine:

A motorist who hit down two policemen who were chasing him on their motorbikes, to prosecute him for operating contrary to the terms of his licence, was fined a total of $28,000 or 12 months imprisonment when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on April 10.

Gary Brown, of Spanish Town is said to have committed the offence on Monday, February 19 about 5:00 pm.

According to Sergeant Osbourne Fearon of the Spanish Town Traffic Department, Brown was spotted by the lawmen along Brunswick Avenue, Spanish Town operating a 'robot' taxi. The lawmen signalled him to stop and he disobeyed, sped off, took the lawmen on a chase along Job Lane, Fairfield Road, and into Winter's Pen where he ended in a cul-de-sac.

The lawmen stopped behind his vehicle and ordered him out of the car. Instead, he reversed the vehicle hitting down both policemen and drove away. The lawmen who suffered severe injuries to their legs, tried to stop him, but he drove away. He was picked up by the Ocho Rios police on April 5 where a warrant was executed on him.

He pleaded guilty in court and the judge subsequently fined him $25,000 for dangerous driving, and $3000 for disobeying a signal of a police officer. If the fine is not paid he will serve 12 months. His licence was also suspended for one year.
