Broderick defends women's crown
published: Thursday | April 12, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

FORMER NATIONAL representative Alana Broderick made it back-to-back wins when she successfully defended the Couples Swept Away Clay Court women's title at the resort in Negril on Monday.

Broderick, who now lives abroad and last represented Jamaica in the 2002 Federation Cup, easily disposed of the United State's Erin Flemming 6-1, 6-3 in women's final in a rare appearance on the local scene.

In the men's final, former champion Vince Mackey proved to be no match for eventual winner Brett Cooper who walked away with the title following straight sets win, 6-3, 7-6. In the men's 35 and over professional category it took Fitzroy House three sets to eventually put away Ardel White 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Floyd Logan had a much easier time as he beat Delroy Findley 6-2, 6-0 in the Amateur 35 and over category.

Denied double

Broderick was denied a double crown when she and partner Mia Veccio were defeated in the women's doubles semi-finals by eventual winners Sharon Von Strolley and Darcy Hayes. Von Strolley and Hayes got the better of Mary Garcia and Jane Wynn, whom they beat 8-7 in the women's final.

The men's doubles final proved to be an all-Jamaican affair as Yussuf Migoko and Tyler Chin faced Kristofer Martin and Dane Vernon. Migoko and Chin got the better of Vernon and Martin with an 8-1 victory.
