Set to grace the pages of countless magazines in the near future is budding Pulse model Chevonese Fender. Standing 5'10 and with a body that would make most women jealous, Fender placed in the top 21 of Pulse's Caribbean Fashion Model contest.
Her road to success runs from growing up in St. Elizabeth, then a move to Kingston and soon the world. Now, Chevonese is working at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts as the public relations officer in the marketing department.
She said her love for modelling was strong and long-lasting and advised hopefuls to keep their job and model at the same time. "You can't rely on the market in Jamaica. The demand for models here isn't high," Chevonese said.
With this in mind, Chevonese admitted that her journey to success had been a relatively slow one, but remains confident that patience speaks to endurance in the business. She hopes one day to achieve the success of fellow Pulse models, Jaunel McKenzie and Nadine Willis. "I intend to create my own history. In this business you have to take initiative and demand what's yours. You can't wait for it to be handed down to you," she said.
The young catwalker recently teamed up with stylist Dexter Pottinger and budding photographer Marvin Bartley to build her portfolio. She hopes the photos will attract attention from agencies in North America and Europe, especially France.
Upon conquering Europe, her next mission is to be the most featured black model in 'W' Magazine, a leading magazine in a world which is lacking black models.
Chevonese will be in action at the upcoming Biggy Fashion show, to be held in The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, on Sunday, April 22.
