published: Friday | April 13, 2007

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

A Cuban registered nurse who allegedly punched and kicked his wife repeatedly, has found himself in trouble with the law and is to reappear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on May 15 to answer to assault charges.

The man, Lionis Leyua Borte, appeared yesterday in the Spanish Town RM Court, after his wife had reported that on April 9, he punched and kicked her before grabbing on to her hands after she returned from a fast-food restaurant.

Beaten savagely

According to Clerk of the Courts, Annmarie Jordan, the complainant got a call from her husband about 8 o'clock. She received another call shortly afterwards but did not answer. When she reached home at Lakeland Drive, Greendale, in Spanish Town, Borte attacked her, telling her, "Mi is the boss here and whenever you want to go on the road you must ask mi." He then proceeded to beat the woman savagely. A report was subsequently made to the police and Borte was arrested and charged with assault by Rudolph Gray of the Spanish Town Police Station.

When he appeared before RM Vashti Chatoor he pleaded not guilty. The court enquired from the complainant if it was the first such an incident had occured she said it was ongoing. The probation officer also told the court that mediation had been offered to the couple but it was refused. The wife told the court that she would not agree to mediation.

A bail application by Borte's attorney was not granted as he told the court that his client's passport was with the police and as a result he was remanded until May 15.
