The Editor, Sir:
The 'Prophet Phinn' should be glad that we are not living in accordance with the instructions of the Old Testament, wherein it is written, inter alia, in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 13: -
"If there arise among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder ... saying, Let us go after other gods ... and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams ... Ye shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and ye shall serve him and cleave to Him. And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death because he has spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God."
In the New Testament, when Jesus was asked whether people should pay tribute to Caesar, He replied: Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
Our revered National Hero Marcus Garvey also said: "God never made the banker for the bank ... the industrial captain for the commercial downtown, the cotton picker to pick cotton or the shoe black to black shoes. He made man and man chooses the job he wants. God has nothing to do with it."
To illustrate his remarks, Mr. Garvey reminded his fellowmen that when Haile Selassie's Abyssinia was being invaded by Benito Mussolini's Italy, the Pope was blessing the crusade while the Coptic Church wasfasting and praying, confident of victory for Ethiopia. The Italians triumphed, using mustard gas. Garvey concluded, as all reasonable persons would, "It is logical that God does not take sides ..." The 'Prophet Phinn' should take counsel and learn that God is not involved with party politics in any country.
I am. etc.,
