Red-hot Wilson secures five titles
published: Tuesday | April 17, 2007

SEAN WILSON was a five-time winner at last weekend's Junior Classic Badminton Tournament at the Constant Spring Golf Club.

Wilson, competing in the Under-13 and Under-11 age groups, defeated his younger brother Shane in their singles match-up, then teamed with his brother to win their doubles final against Shevon Salmon and Zachary Thomas 21-8, 21-4.

In the Under-13 singles finals, Wilson defeated Samuel Ricketts 21-16, 21-17, then teamed with Samuel to defeat his brother Shane and Stanley Ling 21-10, 21-15 in the doubles. In the mixed doubles, Wilson then partnered double winner, Alexandra Beckford of Sts. Peter & Paul Prep., to defeat Howard Murray and Jahvaine Henry 21-15, 21-7.

Wilson's dominance in the two age groups would have made him almost a certainty for six titles had there been an Under-11 mixed doubles.

DeCarteret's College Gareth Henry, a gold medalist from last year's Pan American Junior Badminton Championships, was also a double winner at the event.

Reversing the result

Henry competing in the Under-17 category, defeated Haile Selassie's Tossainte Taylor in all three finals. Henry down 21-10, 21-14 in the singles, then teamed with Delsang Lue Taim Jr. to defeat Taylor and Anthony McNee 21-15, 21-19. Taylor was able to reverse the result in the mixed doubles as he and Shana-Kay Bailey defeated Henry and Mikaylia Haldane 21-14, 20-22, 21-12.

The 13-year-old Bailey, a student of St. Hugh's High, won a second title in the Under-17 category when she teamed with Shakeria Bailey to take the girls doubles from the top seeded pair of Haldane and Mikole Simpson 21-14, 22-20.

Shana-Kay was denied the triple when she was beaten 21-13, 21-16 by Haldane in the the girl's singles event.
