Gunman killed in May Pen as cops foil robbery
published: Wednesday | April 18, 2007

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

The May Pen police in Clarendon said Monday that they had shot and killed one of three gunmen who engaged them in a shoot-out in the parish when they responded to a burglary.

The dead man was not immediately identified. However, one of his cronies was admitted to hospital under police guard while another was being ought by the lawmen.

Reports are that about 5:00 a.m. Monday, the police received reports of a break-in in progress at a business place in the town. The owner of the business, along with the police, went to the premises when men from the building fired at them. The shots were returned and the three men ran. One was later found dead a short distance away and another, who turned up in hospital, was held for questioning by the lawmen.

The Gleaner learned that, for the first three months of 2007, the division has recorded more break-ins than for all of 2006. The outcome of the latest incident is hoped to put a damper on the illegal activity.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Special Investigation has commenced a probe into the killing of the man.
