Ardenne High signals no let-up on cell ban
published: Wednesday | April 18, 2007

Esther Tyson, principal of the Ardenne High School, says a ban on cellular phones would remain.

On Monday she rebuffed claims that the school's administration would be reviewing the decision which was made following a stabbing incident earlier this month involving two students from the school.

"That decision (the ban on cell phones) still stands," she told The Gleaner as she pointed out this was taken after consultation with parents who supported the decision.

Two Ardenne High School boys were reportedly held up and robbed of their cellphones by a group of eight boys from another school.

One of the Ardenne boys was stabbed in the chest while the other was beaten with a hockey stick.

Injured student

On Monday, the principal said the injured student was out of hospital and was at home recuperating.

In reaction to the incident, the administrators of Ardenne called parents to an emergency meeting. It was during the meeting that the decision was made to ban students from carrying cellphones effective this week, the start of the new term.

Ardenne students are reportedly targeted when they walk from the school campus on Ardenne Road to Half-Way Tree using Hope Road or Trafalgar Park.

In recent times, the Principals Association has called for a ban on cellphones claiming their presence in schools has undermined security.
