published: Wednesday | April 18, 2007

THE 2007 CABLE AND Wireless Inter-Secondary Schools tennis competition finals swing into action today at various venues in the Corporate Area.

The three-day event, which has spawned a number of national and U.S. collegiate representatives, will culminate with the finals and awards ceremony at the newly-refurbished Eric Bell Tennis Centre (EBTC) in St. Andrew on Friday.

Thirty-two schools and more than 100 players will be in the chase for top honours at the EBTC, Liguanea Club, NCB - Wellness centre, BNS, UTech and the Police Officers' Club in three sections for boys and girls - 14 and under, 16 and under and 19 and under.

Wolmer's boys will be chasing their fourth consecutive title in the 19s section while Holy Childhood will be out to defend their crown in the girls' senior section.

Girl's title

The boys' 16 champions are Campion, while Holy Childhood also boast that girls' title. In the 14s, Campion are also boys' champs while Immaculate are the top girls' team. Among the players to go on to bigger and better things in the sport after taking part in the competition are former Davis Cup representative Peter Gordon, Federation Cup players Alanna Broderick and Alexis Panton and former national juniors Danielle Monteith, Nayo Morgan and Asha Jaja.

They also were the recipients of scholarships to U.S. colleges and universities along with the likes of Arielle von Strolley, Melissa Murray, Dianna Goldsmith, Ffion Fletcher, Tanisha Hall, Tracy and Lisa Lacroix, Kadija Richards, Yussuf Migoko, Cadren Todd and Dwayne Pagon. The awards ceremony is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
