Election cricket
published: Friday | April 20, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

In true support of the game of cricket with the current ICC CWC 2007 going on, I think the two major political parties ought to have their top 14-member squad selected before the elections.

When we think of unity, what better way we should do it than by using a sport? I am proposing a charity match between the two. While we would ask patrons to pay a small fee to enter the grounds, the team members should pay $10,000 each to play.

I would ask former public defender Howard Hamilton, Ombudsman Herro Blair and Christine Cummings to be first, second and third umpires respectively.

Here are my picks in batting order:

JLP - Audley Shaw, Karl Samuda, Andrew Holness, James Robertson (vice-captain), Delroy Chuck, Bruce Golding (captain), Olivia Grange (wicketkeeper), Pearnel Charles, Mike Henry, Derrick Smith, Clive Mullings.

Reserves: Rudyard Spencer, Shahine Robinson and J.C. Hutchinson.

PNP - Phillip Paulwell, Donald Rhodd, Robert Pickersgill, Portia Simpson Miller (captain), Peter Phillips, Anthony Hylton (wicketkeeper), Dean Peart, Trevor Munroe, Fenton Ferguson, Wykeham McNeill, Omar Davies.

Reserves: A.J. Nicholson (he played at schoolboy level), Delano Franklyn and Luther Buchanan.

In the middle of the upcoming election campaign they should take a break on Labour Day (May 23) and play a 20-20 match at the Trelawy Multi-purpose Stadium.

Howzat?!

I am, etc.,
