Forensic experts are to examine more than 100 firearms that were assigned to members of the security forces who were involved in Tuesday's gunfight in sections of west Kingston.According to Acting Assistant Commissioner Granville Gause, who heads the Bureau of Special Investigation (BSI), his investigators recovered 11 spent shells, but another 150 were handed over by persons who had removed them from the scene.
"With the assistance of Scene of Crime detectives, we re-visited the area and re-constructed and processed the various scenes," he said.
The police said they were concerned that often persons who pick up the spent shells from the crime scenes are reluctant to give statements.
"Persons don't understand that, by removing such vital forensic evidence (spent shells) from the scene, they might have a good case which may just go through the door," said ACP Gause.
The lawmen have recorded at least two statements so far and have made arrangements to collect others later.
Gun violence erupted in the community Tuesday afternoon following an alleged confrontation between the police and heavily armed gunmen. The incident began in the Pink Lane area and later escalated to other sections of the community.
