Racing Along - Bank on Tantesolde
published: Friday | April 20, 2007

The favourite RED OCTOBER (left), ridden by Richard Mitchell, gets the best of long-time leader SPLASHIN RIVER (Paul Francis) to win the sixth race over 1500m for maiden four-year-olds and up at Caymanas Park on Easter Monday. - Colin Hamilton/Freelance PhotographerOrville Clarke, Freelance Writer

IT's Oaks Day at Caymamas Park tomorrow, the well-supported 11-race programme featuring the season's third classic over 2000 metres and the annual renewal of the Lady Geeta Trophy (graded stakes) over 1200 metres.

The Oaks has attracted 14 native-bred three-year-old fillies, while eight have been declared for the Lady Geeta Trophy, including the 2004 Horse of the Year, DISTINCTLY IRISH, the horse who beat him when they last met on March 17, CLOCK WORK, and the 2006 Caribbean Sprint champion, RAMPAGE.

Both the Pick-9 and Super-6 start anew tomorrow with guaranteed minimums of $1 million and $500,000 respectively. Despite the fact that there were no major upsets last Saturday, the $2.1 million Pick-9 was caught by two punters, each receiving a cool million.

The Pick-9 embraces races three to 11, the Super-6 from six to 11. We look at the Super-6 which gets underway with a three-year-old maiden special, in which TANTESOLDE, who has shown promise in two races, looks a banker selection.

From the stables of 'Hall of Fame' trainer Allan 'Billy' Williams, TANTESOLDE finished third to OUTFITHER in a fast-run 1100-metre race on March 7 and has looked improved at exercise since. The lightly raced filly by Outrigger out of Voodoo Chant has been fitted with the visor for this race and with five-time champion Trevor Simpson replacing the apprentice who rode her on last, the hint should be taken.

One of the more open races on the card is the seventh to be contested by 12 mostly unreliable horses (five-year-olds and up) over 1300 metres.

Closely contested race

Horses such as GLORIOUS ONE, RUN ROMAN RUN, PETITE DIVA, BAILAME, OUT OF THE BLUE, SHUTTLE, recent winner BORN-A-GRIERFIELD and the stable-companions AMERICAN DON and BOURN TO RUN should ensure a closely contested race and the likelihood of an upset looms large.

SHUTTLE and WHEELS OF LAW should show superior speed, but GLORIOUS ONE, now pretty light, won't be far behind and along with AMERICAN DON must be dangerous contenders. However, the one I like best is the latter's stable-companion, BOURN TO RUN who was a fast-finishing second to PRINCE ORPHAN over 1100 metres on March 31 and will surely welcome the additional furlong of this race. She gets the nod over GLORIOUS ONE and AMERICAN DON who will find the trip ideal.

The fleet-footed CLOCK WORK, who won the Arthur Jones Cup over 1200 metres ahead of RAMPAGE and the then favourite DISTINCTLY IRISH in muddy conditions on March 17, is tipped to repeat over a similar trip in the eighth race for the Lady Geeta Trophy.

RING OF FIRE, having figured prominently in her last two races over the straight, is preferred to SHALOMI KUMAR in the ninth, while RIO INFINITO is tipped to turn the tables on her recent 1000 Guineas conqueror LADY T in the Oaks. Then, take CLASSY BOY PETE, now eased in the weights, to stave off DR. SOCRATES and UNTOUCHABLE in the 11th for overnight allowance horses.
