The Editor, Sir:I must express my disagreement with Mr. Ken Jones' position expressed in your newspaper on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, that "God is not involved with party politics in any country". God most definitely involves Himself in politics. Not only does He involve Himself but, truth be told, Him run tings.
In the book of Daniel, we are taught in chapter 2 verse 21 that God "... changes times and seasons; He sets up kings and deposes them.", and in 4:17 that "... the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men." So if our National Hero Marcus Garvey thought differently, he was wrong.
I say this, not to support any proclamation by any prophet, but to declare God's sovereignty over the affairs of Jamaica and over all nations. I think God's sovereignty and active control is the only reason it makes any sense to pray for our leaders, as we are encouraged to do in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, so "...that we may live peaceful and quietlives...". Prayer would be pointless if God wasn't in control.
But Mr. Jones is correct in one sense though. God does not take sides. He does not support the agenda or manifesto of the PNP or JLP or any other P. He supports His own side, His own agenda, His own manifesto. God continues to work in and through all human events to accomplish His ultimate purpose - "... the Earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea." - Habakkuk 2:14
So, let's participate in the electoral process, but let us pray to and look to God as the one who holds our future and our destiny in His hands. After all, even after we have voted a government into power, God is still the one in control. "The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will." (Proverbs 21:1).
I am, etc.,
