Portmore maintain second spot
published: Monday | April 23, 2007

Ainsley Walters, Freelance Writer

PORTMORE UNITED yesterday stayed on course for second place in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League and Jamaica's final spot in the Caribbean Club Championship when a brace from Oneil McDonald handed them a 3-1 win over mid-table August Town at Ferdie Neita Park.

The veteran McDonald netted in the 28th and 77th minutes for Portmore, who got their other goal in the 64th, a brilliantly timed mid-air volley from midfielder Anthony Bennett.

August Town had actually pulled level at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Portmore goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers completely misjudged Aphas Bernard's 20-odd yards shot, which fell just short of the crouching goalie and flew between his legs.

Portmore's home victory moved them to 58 points, two clear of Reno, who ambushed demoted Naggo Head 5-1.

RACE FOR SECOND

With two rounds left to go, the race for second place behind champions Harbour View remains tight with Portmore set to travel to Boys' Town on Wednesday and Reno away at Village.

Portmore's general manager, Horace Reid, who issued orders from the sideline yesterday, said: "The objective is the Caribbean Club Championships.

"We have two more games to go and we hope to maintain our focus and get some positive results," he added.

Reid blamed another mediocre season from Portmore in which they again drew too many games, on a spate of injuries and defensive woes.

"We've not been as consistent in producing goals," he said. "For the first two rounds we did very well in our defensive system. We scored in every game but in recent times we have not been as tight defensively."

Hailing champions Harbour View as the most organised team on and off the field this season, Reid said they were deserving of the title.

"All teams in the Premier League can feel proud with who are champions, both on and off the field," he added.
