Western Bureau:

Reno FC added a bright spark to their Caribbean Club Championship aspirations yesterday afternoon when they clobbered relegated Naggo Head 5-1 in their 2006-07 Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) fixture at the Frome Sports Ground, in Westmoreland.

The Reno team, which sits in third place behind newly crowned champions Harbour View and second-placed Portmore United on 56 points, got their goals through Kevon Grant (2), Fabian Blake and substitutes Kendre Quarrie and Ricardo Scott. Christopher Allen got Naggo Head's consolation goal.

"This win was a most welcome one for us as it helps us to remain on course for a place in the Caribbean Club Championship and it is also a nice way to recover from our disappointing showing against Seba in our last game," said Reno's coach Wendell Downswell.

He added: "The spirit out there was good as we basically kept Naggo Head out of the game."

After an enterprising start by Naggo Head in which they looked quite promising through Kenardo Forbes and Mark Newsome, Reno gradually wrestled control and took the lead in the 24th minute when skipper Blake pounced on a rebound before the goal and slotted in a grounder, making the score 1-0.

Momentum

With the momentum in Reno's favour, they struck again in the 40th minute. Grant won possession some 25 yards from goal and drilled home a cracking shot, which made the half-time score 2-0.

Despite a bold attemp by Nagoo Head to pull themselves back into the game, Reno kept marching forward with authority, striking back-to-back goals in the 73rd and 75th minutes respectively. Firstly, Grant latched on a superb pass by Quarrie and booted home, making the score 3-0. Then, a delightful exchange of passes between Nicholy Findlayson and Blake created an opening for Quarrie, who slotted in, making the score 4-0.

With embarrassment facing them, Naggo Head pulled back a goal in the 82nd minute when Allen caught the Reno defence napping on a counter-attack and crashed home from the edge of the penalty area, making the score 4-1.

However, Reno was to have the last laugh as after coming close on at least three occasions, Scott finally got on the scoresheet when he pounced on a pass from Findlayson and fired home his 13th goal of the season through the legs of goalkeeper Leon Goffe, making the final score 5-1.
