No to thug rule
published: Friday | April 27, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am extremely saddened to see otherwise bright men and women so captivated by partisan politics that they lose all sense of reasoning. Take for instance the Tivoli dilemma, how can they scold the police for entering into this little area of Jamaica, especially, they reason, in an election year. They argue that it's a ploy to provoke the gunmen into a shootout for political traction.

It is wrong to condemn the police for such an action. Nowhere in a civilized state should be a no-go for the lawmen. In fact this is indeed encouraging anarchy.

If in fact the police are doing this for political reasons, then the thugs should not engage them in a shootout, and I bet all this foolishness would stop. The people of Tivoli deserve better than this antiquated thug rule, and people who know better shouldencourage a better direction, because the fixing of the nation should start from the top.

I am, etc.,
