The Editor, Sir:
I write to congratulate Ms. Hickling on her well written article. (The Gleaner 4/25/07) Hickling has ignited the deep hurt I feel when I see what is happening to our Caribbean communities in general. There are learned people in our country that encourage some of the behaviour we see and hear about on our streets, because it's a big money spinner. No wonder our cricketers behave the way they do. When we accept as 'cultcha' our young men and women wearing their underclothes exposed as a norm, we have lost our pride and self esteem as a people. When as a host Caribbean nation the host team to the Cricket World Cup can deplane the way they did in Montego Bay as a bunch of rag tag street boys; and show disdain when challenged by their supporters, why are we surprised at their performance? They have no pride in themselves so why should they have any respect for the rich history of West Indies cricket. "Ah Nuh Nutten"'.
Ms Hickling, as concerned citizens we must try to return to a sense of self respect through music, which is a contributing factor to the way our children behave. When the sound boxes pound their lyrics of violence into thesubconscious minds of our children they awake irritable and have violent behaviours. Dr. Winsome Miller-Rowe of Montego Bay has for years tried to show the relationship between music and behaviour patterns. Have dialogue with her. I totally agree with you, Ms Hickling, "We need to get our house in order."
I am, etc.,
A. GUY MORRIS
