The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has been cleared of fraudulent billing in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, by an audit conducted by accounting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers.Just last week, United States-based Mirant announced that they had reached agreement to sell their 80 per cent stake in the company to Marubeni Corporation of Japan. Government retains the other 20 per cent.
PWC did not find any fault with the JPS meter reading process.
However, the report, commissioned by the Office of Utility Regulations (OUR) and published on the regulator's website Wednesday, found JPS at fault in 10 of 50 sample complaints investigated by PWC. The report was based on the OUR's complaints database, the majority of which were received in the period following Hurricane Ivan.
JPS was also found in breach of guaranteed standards in seven instances, but only two such customers had asked for compensation.
