Henry referred to JRC by Stewards
published: Friday | April 27, 2007

Henry

The Operations Stewards on Tuesday have referred former champion jockey Wesley 'Callaloo' Henry to the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) for his indifferent riding of the 3-5 favourite JAZZY JET in the first race at Caymanas Park on Easter Monday.

Henry was summoned at the Winchester Road offices of the JRC on Tuesday to explain his riding of JAZZY JET, but apparently failed to convince them that he rode the filly on its merit in the 1100-metre race in which she finished fourth to FELICIDAD. The stewards could have imposed the maximum suspension of 25 racedays on Henry, but thought the case was so serious that it warranted a referral to the full commission.

Meanwhile, Henry has been automatically stood down for 21 calendar days during which time the commissioners will review his caseand take appropriate action if necessary.

If found guilty, Henry could be banned for well in excess of the 25 racedays (about four months) the Stewards could have imposed. Still, in a previous case involving Trevor Simpson in May, 2005, this for his failure to ride BADBOYBIN on its merits, the many-time champion jockey received a mere slap on the wrist, a five-day suspension and $25,000 fine, after his case was referred by the stewards to the full commission.
