Tainos Day tomorrow
published: Thursday | May 3, 2007

Tomorrow will be marked as the first Tainos Day, in commemoration of the original inhabitants of Jamaica.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) said it has decided to designate the day to the legacy of the Tainos, the name given to Arawaks in the northern Caribbean, since not doing so had created "an imbalance". The Tainos were largely eliminated by disease and overwork, forced by Spanish colonialists.

An event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann, with lectures and discussions as well as an exhibition of Taino artefacts from the JNHT collection and Taino foods.
