Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) scored a hard-fought 2-1 win over Canada at the National Stadiym yesterday in their Group B CONCACAF Under-17 World Cup qualifier and rekindled their chances of advancing.
Canada, with their second consecutive defeat, ended their campaign with four points, while T&T revived their chances with their first win and moved to three points with a game against Jamaica tomorrow.
T&T coach Anton Corneal said his team knew what they had to do and they did it the hard way.
"It was a fight and after we went in front by two goals, we didn't know how to handle it. It was the worst result to be 2-0 up. Canada missed some easy opportunities, but that's the game."
He added: "We came here knowing that we had two games to win and we knew that we had to step up against Canada and now we wait for Jamaica."
The game started at a brisk pace with both teams missing clear-cut chances in the first two minutes before Leston Paul opened the scoring for T&T in the fourth minute with a blistering drive from outside the box.
Stephen Knox doubled the lead in the 39th minute, latching on to an excellent through-to-pass from Daniel Cyrus and calmly slotting home, much to the delight of the Jamaican fans and about 10 voiceferous T&T supporters.
It was the first time in ages that Jamaicans were actually cheering for a T&T team that was in the same tournament.
The more physical Canadians got their goal from Mohamed Sylla in the 47th after goalkeeper Adam Street allowed his shot to squirm under him and trickle into the net.
Meanwhile, Canada's coach, Stephen Hart, says they have nobody to blame but themselves.
"The bottom line is if you don't take your chances you won't score. We had several opportunities but that's how it goes. I thought we threw it away and now our destiny is in somebody else's hand and frankly I don't expect too much."
