SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:
A senior citizen who is accused of defrauding a woman of more than $200,000 was remanded when she appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court, charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence.
She is Dorrett Davis, also known as Dorrett Willocks, of Spanish Town, St. Catherine.
According to Detective Corporal Leroy Guy of the Spanish Town police, in January 2006, the complainant met the 63-year-old woman during a conversation when the accused convinced her that she could provide her with a valid United States visa. Davis told the complainant that the visa would cost her $260,000 and that she would deliver the document within three months. The complainant paid over $200,000 in tranches of $80,000, $90,000 and $30,000.
Matter reported to police
When the deal fell through, the complainant demanded her money but it was not forthcoming. As a result, the matter was reported to the police and the senior citizen was picked up at her home and charged. When she appeared in court, the case took on a new twist when the accused insisted that she did not wear glasses and it was the lawman who called her by the name Davis and that is why she gave that name.
The police told the court that they need to do further investigations to assertain the true identity of the elderly woman. She was subsequently remanded to return to court on May 15.
