Evelyn Campbell-Morgan, public relations manager of The Mico College Care Centre for Child Assessment and Research in Education (CARE), says the Government's plans to establish a school for children with behavioural problems will not solve the problem of indiscipline in schools.
"A school for students exhibiting aggressive behaviour seems like a good idea, however, it will only be a Band-aid to the wound and will not get to the root causes and thus eliminate the problem," said Campbell-Morgan.
"The real problem can be dealt with through education and behaviour management. Educators, teachers, parents and caregivers as well as our communities must be educated to detect inappropriate behaviours in our children," she added.
To this end, the CARE is to host its second biennial conference on behaviour management from May 25-26 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston.
The theme for the conference is 'Education and Behaviour Management: Keys to reducing Violence in our Community'. Counsellors, educators, teachers and other caregivers will be exposed to a dynamic programme of learning opportunities and professional development.
Presentations will focus on:
Approaches to handle behavioural problems in the classroom, among others.
