NOTE-WORTHY - Courageous cop!
published: Wednesday | May 16, 2007

Courageous cop!

I have just read the story of Dorret Latchman's attempted rape. I would just like to say to Dorret that she was very courageous in what she did. I am glad that she is trying to get over it.

What people have to understand is that just because the rape didn't actually take place, the violation is still the same, the feelings are just as bad. I'm glad that she was someone who even had a chance to fight for her life until help came due to her training as a policewoman.

Many are not so lucky and do not have the strength of character that she has, and I think she has done her community a great service. For it could have ended more severely for someone else. Her community should commend her on what she has done and help her to heal those emotional wounds. We will be praying for you, Dorret. God bless.

Roadwork

Kindly permit me to share with your readers the good news that the section of the Osborne Store to Ashley road that divides the constituenciesof North Central and South West Clarendon has finally been rehabilitated.

Driving from Rock to Ashley is no longer a nightmare. Thanks to the powers that be for responding to our pleas. Unfortunately, it is very challenging to get to this section of the road. The incomplete work on the Rock road is a major problem.

The road is partially split in one corner. The danger is obvious. Somehow over the years those who have worked on the road have not been able to deal with the challenges posed by water on the Osborne Store to Rock section of the road. This section of the road is a major hazard to motorists and pedestrians alike.

The citizens of Bagatelle and environs thank the authorities for the rehabilitation of the Rock to Ashley road and call on them to complete the portion left at Rock, and rehabilitate the Osborne Store to Rock section of the road. Thanks to The Gleaner Company for allowing us to use this medium to voice our concerns.

Word query

I am a 70-year-old Jamaican expatriate living in Canada. My Jamaican grandmother and others used to make use of the word 'yoke', meaning to experience nausea when eating certain unpalatable foods.

I cannot find the word in any dictionary. I have looked in Jamaica Talk by Cassidy, in the Dictionary of Jamaican English by Lepage, and in Webster's and Oxford. It simply isn't there. Could someone set me straight on this word?
