Charisma not the answer
published: Tuesday | May 22, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

If the definition of charisma as presented by 'experts' is to be believed, then Portia is far from charismatic. While she does speak dynamically while on the campaign trail, she was far from dynamic when she spoke on the cement crisis, the National Solid Waste scandal, the Trafigura scandal and the numerous other matters of great importance to Jamaica.

Portia takes no risks. She is very conventional in her loyalty to PNP supporters and ministers, even when they are wrong as Paulwell frequently has been. She follows faithfully in the tradition of former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.

In a crisis, no one can depend on Portia. Look at how long it took her to get to St. Mary after the floods. To date the bridges are still unsafe or absent, even as we approach another hurricane season. God help us if we are hit.

Yes, despite her dismal performance, let's agree that Portia is charismatic. Where does that put us as Jamaicans? Will charisma reduce our burgeoning debt? Will charisma reduce unemployment? Will charisma reduce crime and violence? The answer to these very important questions is a resounding, 'NO'. This time around let's vote with our heads, not our hearts.

I am, etc.,
